Recently, with the approval of the Municipal People's Government, the list of the first batch of wetlands under protection in the Cixi City was announced, with the Shanglinhu Reservoir and the Liduhu Reservoir included on the list.
Wetlands are known as the "Kidney of the Earth", and in the World Nature Conservation Program, wetlands, along with forests and oceans, are listed as the three major ecosystems on Earth. Wetlands, as an important and unique ecosystem, have multiple important functions such as maintaining water sources, purifying water quality, regulating floods and storing water, storing carbon and sequestrating carbon, regulating climate, and protecting biodiversity and so on. They are an important component of the ecological security system and also an important resource for sustainable development of the national economy.
It is learnt that the Shanglinhu Reservoir, which has been included on the list of the first batch of wetlands under protection in our city, is located in the Kuangyan Town. It is a multi-year regulating reservoir mainly for water supply, combined with flood control, ecological aquaculture, and other comprehensive utilization. It is a provincial-level drinking water source conservation area under protection. The Liduhu Reservoir is located on the main stream of the Du'ao River in the Minghe, Guanhaiwei Town. It is a medium-sized reservoir mainly used for flood control and water supply, combined with comprehensive utilization of irrigation, aquaculture, etc.. It is currently a first-class area with drinking water sources under protection.
In recent years, Cixi has attached great importance to ecological environment protection and construction, adhering to the harmonious coexistence between humans and the nature, firmly establishing the concept that ecology is the most precious resource, introducing wetland protection measures, delineating wetland ecological red lines, and determining the publication of lists of wetlands under protection, which will effectively play the role of wetlands and promote sustainable development.
